The reader insert and thirteen other transfemme individuals are converted into what the story calls "wolves", </ins>a <ins style="font-weight: bold; text-decoration: none;">stopgap measure by a country that can no longer produce full mechs. They are trained as a pack and deployed to defend the last imperial stronghold before Lt. Halstead is killed and control over them is lost.
